Joshua Molnar says he acted in self-defence
The family of Yousef Makki has urged a coroner to conclude his fatal stabbing was an unlawful killing. Yousef was killed by his friend Joshua Molnar, who says he acted in self-defence.
Molnar has admitted lying to police at the scene by suggesting the attackers had fled in a car. Chowdhary told police in a 999 call he had seen a 'whip', or a car, leave the scene, but he denies lying. The lawyer pointed to evidence from Adam Chowdhary who told the new inquest Yousef wasn't holding a knife in the run-up to the stabbing and that, after the fatal wound had been inflicted and Yousef was injured on the ground, Chowdhary had given evidence Yousef produced a flick knife from his inside jacket pocket with its blade retracted. Chowdhary threw this blade down a grid, telling the inquest he thought this was what Yousef was indicating he should do.
Lisa Judge, representing Molnar, told the court it wasn't that his client had never had a memory of the fatal incident but that he had 'lost' that memory. The lawyer went: "People who lie get things nailed on. They don't make mistakes and they don't make inconsistencies. They tell the lie and it tends to be pretty straight."
Molnar told a jury in his 2019 trial he was acting in self-defence when he stabbed Yousef and went on to be acquitted of murder and manslaughter.
