While the police have opened an inquest into the death of Soweto teenager Matshepo Malefane, her family is struggling to come to terms with her sudden death, especially how she died
Malefane’s lifeless body was discovered by community members hanging from a tree in Mapetla last Wednesday.
The last time I saw her was in the company of her boyfriend last Tuesday after she disappeared last Monday night upon telling our mother that she had stomach pains so she wanted to go to bed. “We knew that she had a boyfriend, but we did not know where he lived. So we went to her maths tutor nearby, who showed us the house. When we got there, we found Matshepo and her boyfriend watching TV. I then got angry and left the room, but my mom told me that they had agreed that the boyfriend would accompany her home.”He said the 19-year-old had aspirations of studying health sciences and was in the process of upgrading her mathematics marks to enable her to study at a suitable university.
“I could sense that something was not right when her boyfriend did not answer his phone and later the phone seemed to be turned off,” said the distraught brother, adding that he had to suffer the trauma of identifying her body at the scene of her death after the family heard about the incident from a community member.SuppliedChildhood friend Palesa Moloi said she was devastated:
