Go Red for Women fundraises for heart health and awareness.
FAIRBANKS, Alaska - 2024 marks the twentieth year of Fairbanks Go Red, and the hundredth overall year of the American Heart Association. Heart disease is the leading cause of death in women, and the Go Red for Women movement is making a difference in Fairbanks.
Over a dozen vendors from the local community turned out at the annual Fairbanks event on Friday, March 1, offering everything from a photo booth to free blood pressure measurement and tips on early detection of breast cancer. This year Go Red for Women is chaired by Stephanie Woodard and Jenny Gilbertson, coaches and co-founders of the PWR House Gym. They say that cardiovascular diseases in women often go undiagnosed and under-treated. The symptoms that affect women are often different than those that affect men, and it is important to spread awareness of the warning signs.
During the luncheon keynote speaker Jude Mabone, who was crowned Miss District of Columbia, described her experiences as a survivor of six heart attacks due to heart disease. Mabone experienced her first heart attack as a junior in high school during one of her routine six-mile runs and later found her calling, spreading awareness about the signs of heart disease in women.
Proceeds from the fundraiser will go to Go Red for Women’s goals, which this year includes sending food dehydrators as well as CPR training out to rural Alaskan villages, which do not have much access to consistent healthcare.
