Footage of an Israeli airstrike in 2021 that collapsed Gaza’s Al-Shorouk tower block has been falsely captioned on social media as showing a 2023 response to an attack on its soil from the Palestinian militant group Hamas.
The video, which features Al Jazeera branding and shows a building collapsing into a cloud of dust and smoke, was shared on, formerly known as Twitter, with the caption: “Israel launched Operation Iron Swords Israel destroys third Gaza tower eliminated Palestinian Terrorists.”retaliating to the Iran-backed Hamas’ assault on Oct. 7, which killed at least 900 people. Gaza’s health ministry said a further 770 people were killed in the retaliatory strikes.
X post by Al Jazeera that reads: “This is the moment the 14-storey al-Shorouq tower, housing media offices in Gaza City, was completely destroyed by multiple Israeli air raids…”published by CNN, citing Reuters, said the tower was amongst other high-rise buildings destroyed by Israeli forces in a violent escalation which began on May 10, 2021.
