In the wake of the Christchurch massacre, Scott Morrison overestimated the ability of algorithms to censor hate content, as RMIT ABC Fact Check found out.

This technique converts an image, for example, into a string of numbers, like a digital fingerprint, that can be checked against a database.

Professor Walsh said these algorithms were"very brittle":"We can change a single pixel ... [or] rotate the camera by a few degrees and fool [them]."Professor Burgess said there was now"a widespread culture of creative circumvention" of social media content controls, which was partly a backlash against"the ferocity with which these platforms have policed copyright infringement".

Professor Burgess said that was a fair comment with respect to the video content, though not for the hate speech that enabled it, of which examples were plentiful.
