Facing more threats, election workers ramp up security and brace themselves for Election Day

There are just four days left until a consequential midterm election in Colorado. Along with collecting and processing thousands of ballots, election officials in the state are also focused on their safety as well as that of their employees. COPolitics

The election comes as threats against poll workers increase in the state.

Zygielbaum is responsible for overseeing 600 election workers in the county. Since 2020, the office has made significant security upgrades to keep workers safe. Over in Weld County, Clerk and Recorder Carly Koppes knows all too well how serious those threats can be. She has even received death threats just for doing her job. Because Weld County was already in the process of designing its new elections building in 2020, they were able to include security upgrades in the designs for added safety.

“Now we kind of have this resurgence. And the thing is, I'm seeing a lot of the same talking points, the same dialect from these people,” Koppes said. “I think we are going to be seeing this for, unfortunately, quite a few years. I don't think it's going to die off very soon at all. I think social media has really boosted it even more.”
