Facebook bans Faith Goldy amid crackdown on ‘organized hate’ GlobeBusiness
Facebook said it has banned former Rebel media personality Faith Goldy as part of a move to crack down on white nationalism and organized hate on its platform.
Ms. Goldy, a former Toronto mayoral candidate and far-right media personality, is among several Canadians that the social media giant said it would ban for spreading hate speech online. “These individuals and organizations have expressed white nationalist sentiments and violate Facebook’s policy on dangerous individuals and organizations,” Facebook said in a statement. Kevin Goudreau, Canadian Nationalist Front, Aryan Strikeforce, Wolves of Odin, and Soldiers of Odin were also banned from Facebook. The ban covers any content that posted to Facebook or photo-sharing app Instagram, which Facebook also owns.
Late last month, Facebook said it would extend its ban on hate speech to include posts that “praise or support for white nationalism and white separatism.” But as recently as last week, the social media firm told the Huffington Post that a video Ms. Goldy had posted on Facebook calling on Jews and people of colour repay European countries for “replacing” their white populations didn’t violate the company’s terms of service.
“Individuals and organizations who spread hate, attack, or call for the exclusion of others on the basis of who they are have no place our services. That’s why we have a, which states that we do not allow those who are engaged in offline “organized hate” to have a presence on our services," the company said in a statement Monday. “The individuals and organizations we have banned today violate this policy, and they will no longer be allowed a presence on our services.
