The FBI and FTC being asked to investigate FaceApp is the latest example of the disproportionate response to this viral app getting totally out of control.
FaceApp, the controversial app which uses AI to age user photos, has become the viral story of the month. Yesterday, July 17, there was a highly-charged debate as to whether the app posed a privacy threat, asNo, FaceApp isn’t taking photos of your face and taking them back to Russia for some nefarious project. At least that’s what current evidence suggests."
Schumer also raised the specter of whether U.S. citizens' data will be sent and stored and potentially misused in Russia, asking whether"the full and irrevocable access to personal photos and data," represents"a national security and privacy risk for millions of U.S. citizens—FaceApp's location in Russia raises questions regarding how and when the company provides access to the data of U.S. citizens to third parties, including potentially foreign governments.
This is all a massive storm in an AI-powered teacup, of course. There are no real privacy or security concerns with FaceApp, and as TechCrunch hashe answers to [Schumer's] questions, should we choose to believe them, are that user data is not in fact sent to Russia, the company doesn’t track users and usually can’t, doesn’t sell data to third parties, and deletes 'most' photos within 48 hours.
