Worldcoin is aiming to team up with some of the biggest names in tech in a race to gather as many users as possible — including OpenAI.
For Worldcoin , the project that scans people’s irises in order to give them a digital identity and crypto tokens, the race to gather as many users as possible has been marked by increasing regulatory scrutiny and data privacy concerns.
Alex Blania, chief executive officer at Tools for Humanity, described the scrutiny as partly attributable to the prominent profile of his co-founder, Sam Altman.“Just, like, much more attention than you would usually face as a company of that size or a project of that size.” Previously, Worldcoin used an age verification feature built into the orb, the device it developed to scan users’ eyes, to signal that a person was too young to be registered, according to Blania.
Blania and Altman have argued that Worldcoin’s identity system delivers “proof of personhood,” something that will differentiate humans on the internet from bots like ChatGPT. “There’s some natural things in how we might and will work together,” he said. “But it’s nothing that we’re ready to announce yet.”
He said that the orb model currently conducting scans was a prototype that was never meant to make it to market. The project is also moving away from being tied to the term “universal basic income,” which had been a pet passion of Altman’s.
