The Oakland Symphony will perform two St. Mary’s College professors’ collaboration ‘Bodies on the Line’ at the Paramount Theatre.

Rockridge resident Rebecca Engle will attend the Oakland Symphony next month but not as a patron. The longtime performing arts professor at St. Mary’s College in Moraga has collaborated with St. Mary’s professor emeritus Martin Rokeach to create the theatrical premier of “Bodies on the Line: The Great Flint Sit-down Strike.”

Engle wrote the lyrics and Rokeach composed the music for this inspirational story of a Depression-era auto strike against General Motors — known as “the strike heard around the world.” The seed for the idea came from Rokeach. Engle says the 1937 auto strike had incredible characters and that the more she read about it the more she realized the story’s impact. To research the story, the professors went to Michigan and did a very intensive dive into some 10 sets of archives over eight days. The late maestro Michael Morgan, who commissioned the oratorio in 2016, called the Flint story “on point” with Oakland Symphony’s commitment to addressing social issues head-on.
