A giant, swirling storm system billowing across the southern U.S. killed at least six people and spawned a tornado on Thursday that shredded the walls of homes, toppled roofs and uprooted trees in Selma, Ala.

Plumes of thick, black smoke rose over the city from a fire. It was not immediately known whether the storm caused the fire.

Sever weather damaged structures and left debris in its wake on Thursday in Selma. There were no fatalities reported as a result of the tornado, but officials said the damage was still being assessed.A few blocks past the city's famed Edmund Pettus Bridge, an enduring symbol of the voting rights movement, buildings were crumpled by the storm and trees blocked roadways.

Northeast of Selma, Ernie Baggett, the emergency management director in Autauga County told The Associated Press he could confirm six fatalities.Malesha McVay drove parallel to the tornado with her family. She says it got less than two kilometres from her home before suddenly turning."It would hit a house and black smoke would swirl up," McVay said. Selma's mayor said there were multiple downed powerlines, and that the situation is considered an emergency.In Georgia, a passenger died when a tree fell on a vehicle in Jackson during the storm, Butts County Coroner Lacey Prue said. In the same county southeast of Atlanta, the storm appeared to have knocked a freight train off its tracks, officials said.
