The South African Weather Service (SAWS) warns of heavy rains and potential flooding in several provinces from January 5th to 8th. Motorists and pedestrians are advised to exercise caution due to potential hazardous conditions.
The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued an extreme weather warning for heavy rains and potential flooding from Sunday, 5 January, to Wednesday, 8 January. Provinces expected to be affected include North West, Free State, Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, and southern Mpumalanga. These areas will experience scattered to widespread showers and thundershowers. Motorists are urged to exercise caution during this period, ensuring clear windscreens and avoiding flooded low-water bridges.
Pedestrians and drivers should also be aware that heavy rain can increase risks on the roads, even at night. The Road Traffic Management Centre (RTMC) has highlighted the critical danger posed by driving during this weather event, as a higher number of road fatalities than previous years has already been reported. Localized flooding and disruptions are likely to persist into Monday and beyond, affecting much of the central and eastern regions. Residents in Gauteng, Limpopo’s western Bushveld, and parts of Mpumalanga and KwaZulu-Natal should prepare for extended rainfall through Wednesday. Both SAWS and RTMC emphasize the need for preparedness and responsible behavior during this period of adverse weather. They advise road users to check forecasts regularly and plan travel carefully
