The festival’s impetus goes back a few years to Tunes for Tyrants, an important three-part BBC TV documentary by British radio and television presenter Suzy Klein, which was an exemplary exploration of how classical music was used and abused in the political life of the last century. Otto Tausk, then just about to become music director of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, conducted the musical examples. It was natural to revisit this potent idea for Tausk’s first VSO festival.
He explains: “The purpose of the VSO festival programming is to stimulate thought and discussion about the connections between composers and their political contexts. Of course, the series could have been more controversial, or much longer, but we are happy with the balance of the works.”
