Exploding e-bike battery injures man, destroys Barrio Logan apartment [Breaking]
A fire that ignited after an e-bike battery caught fire and exploded left a man with burn injuries and destroyed an apartment in Barrio Logan early Sunday, fire officials said.
A couple was charging an electric bike in their living room when the battery caught fire, San Diego Fire-Rescue Deputy Chief of Operations Dan Eddy said.The man tried to put out the fire by pouring water on it when it exploded, Eddy said. The man suffered severe burns to his arms and legs and was rushed to the UC San Diego Burn Center.A woman in the apartment where the fire started escaped the unit and neighbors gave her blankets so she could cover herself because she was unclothed.
Investigators from the hazardous materials unit and the Metro Arson Strike Team removed other lithium ion batteries that were in the residence for safe disposal.
