Your insurance rates won’t necessarily go up overnight if the fire protection rating in your area changes, said rep from Fire Underwriters Survey
If the fire protection rating in your area changes, it doesn’t mean your insurance company will increase rates right away, although it could happen.
Most insurance underwriters require residential properties to be at least eight to 13 kilometres from fire stations in order to be considered protected. Although classified as “unprotected” according to underwriters, it doesn’t mean Greater Sudbury Fire Services members aren’t responding to calls. It just means they’re likely arriving after a flashover has occurred, and home insurance will be more expensive as a result.
Some of these areas already considered unprotected are in areas which would be affected by the consolidation of fire stations. Labbée said it was her understanding that these residents should already be paying the highest insurance rates possible. “So they're slow-walking towards the unprotected rate,” he said. “And they may say to the property owner, you know what, your rate is going to be going up by 10 per cent this year, and over the next few years, it will continue to go up, because we see your protection class is now different than what it was over the last 10 years.”Vagnini asked how many insurance companies use the Fire Underwriters Survey numbers.
