After surviving a harrowing journey from Angola in the cargo hold of a ship in 1619, the first Africans to become enslaved in America landed in Virginia.

Four hundred years ago on the shores of Luanda, Angola, the San Juan Bautista sailed off with 350 enslaved Africans chained head to foot in its cargo hold. The five-month journey across the Atlantic, deadly and dangerous, marked the horrific beginning of America's original sin: slavery.

For 20 to 30 enslaved Africans, the journey landed them on the shores of the Virginia colony in August 1619. USA TODAY has created an augmented reality experience vividly depicting what those captives would have first seen and experienced as they were forced onto the ship.
