With regulations being changed from early next year, Starlink is set to arrive sooner than anticipated in South Africa.

This as the Department of Communications and Digital Technology will seek to change policy around “equity ownership requirements” early next year.

American satellite internet provider Starlink could be allowed to operate in South Africa from as soon as the middle of 2025, as the Department of Communications and Digital Technology is expected to finalise new rules that will allow providers like Starlink to be licensed without fulfilling certain pre-existing criteria..

After this, the policy direction change is expected to take place from as early as “mid 2025” according to the DCDT, allowing Starlink to successfully apply for a license. “Broadband access makes it easier for people to start businesses, grow businesses, seek employment, work remotely, and market goods and services,” Malatsi said earlier this year about Starlink, without mentioning the company.
