The Porter County Redevelopment Commission has been tackling a number of initiatives from expansion of broadband service to sprucing up the U.S. 6 corridor in South Haven. Project manager Stu Summers gave a recap of their efforts to the Porter County Council at the end of its meeting Tuesday night.
Hoping to bring the South Haven portion of the U.S. 6 corridor up to the aesthetic standard found west in Portage, the RDC is seeking to dangle carrots to get business owners to improve their properties. “You have similar codes,” Summers told the council, “but Portage has tighter code enforcement.
Maintaining a broadband-ready community designation has been a priority for Porter County and the elimination of fees to telecommunications companies looking to expand their service areas has been a boon to that effort. Summers said telecommunications permits being issued in Porter County have increased 651% up to 819 last year compared to only 109 in 2021.
RDC member Mary Jane Thomas is pursuing grants for rural Porter County. Porter County currently ranks 91st out of 92 Hoosier counties in rural housing grants. If awarded the grant Porter County could provide the residents of the nearly 2,000 housing units in South Haven with exposure to other types of trees.
