A study involving more than 1 million people found that exercise can reduce the risk of a range of cancers, including those affecting the lung and bowel
“The NHS recommends 150 minutes of activity a week, but it’s fine to build up activity over time and there are lots of ways to be more active. You don’t need to run a marathon or join a gym – anything that gets you warmer, slightly out of breath, and your heart beating faster counts. So, it doesn’t matter if you go for a brisk walk, a cycle with a friend, or even get the housework done, these could all count as ways to be active.
“It is important to keep in mind that while all these lifestyle factors and others affect the risk of developing cancer, the risk is also affect by other things such as genetics. It is also important to keep in mind that having sufficient fitness has other health benefits,” he added. Nevertheless, their findings are reflected in the American Society of Clinical Oncology guidelines on exercise during cancer treatment, he points out.
