It's the kind of weather forecast that stands out in the middle of winter, even in sunny California: Downtown LA is expected to hit 90 degrees this week.

Satchel Freiberger, 21, from the San Fernando Valley enjoys the beautiful weather after a surfing session at Malibu Lagoon State Beach on Jan. 14, 2021.It's the kind of weather forecast that stands out in the middle of winter, even in sunny California: Downtown Los Angeles is expected to hit a high of 90 degrees this week, the National Weather Service said.

Record-breaking temperatures are heating up Southern California as high pressure builds over the region and sticks around through the weekend. "We're looking at a range of temperatures between 85 and 90 degrees between Wednesday and Friday," said David Sweet, a meteorologist with the weather service."The temperatures are about 15 to 20 degrees above normal. Typically, the high temperature in downtown Los Angeles would be 68 at this time of year. I would say it's unusual."

Ahead of the warm-up, the weather service issued an excessive heat watch for the greater Los Angeles area Wednesday through Friday, warning of wintertime heat stress, especially for those not acclimated to the heat. Obviously, temperatures in the low-90s aren't nearly as sweltering as the 100-degree highs that bake Southern California in summer, but forecasters say unusually warm weather in winter can catch people off guard, and it's important to hydrate.
