Mobile phone users will receive a message as well as a sound and vibration for up to 10 seconds

The time and date of a UK-wide emergency alert test has been announced. On Sunday, April 23, all 4G and 5G mobile phones across the country will receive a message as well as a sound and vibration for up to 10 seconds.

UK residents will receive the test alert at 3pm and do not need to take any action. People will just need to swipe away the message or click 'OK' on their home screen, as if it was a normal notification or low battery warning.Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, Oliver Dowden MP, said: “Put the date in your diaries - at 3pm on 23 April, we'll be testing our new national Emergency Alerts system.

This system will bring the UK in line with other countries that already use the system, such as the US, Canada, the Netherlands and Japan. It has been widely credited with saving lives during severe weather events. The Government has worked together with the emergency services and partners, including the Football Association and London Marathon, to ensure the national test has minimum impact on any major events taking place on the day.

National Police Chiefs’ Council Lead for Civil Contingencies, Assistant Chief Constable Owen Weatherill, said: “Warning and informing the public at speed during times of crises can be vital. We look forward to further developing the use of the Emergency Alerts capability and how it can have real benefits for the public to protect and preserve life, as well as supporting policing’s wider response to critical incidents with partner agencies.
