The former employee, who is black, alleges Ascend Wellness Holdings aided and abetted the discrimination, rather than stop it.

In her lawsuit, the ex-employee says her termination and “the hostile work environment she experienced, were motivated in whole or in part by their implicit and explicit biases against Black people” and violated the New Jersey Law Against Discrimination.

Upper-level managers at Ascend “knew or should have known about the violations” and allowed the discrimination to happen and participated in it, the suit alleges. All of N.J.’s adult legal weed stores are run by big corporations. That has to change, many say. The former Ascend employee also claims she was unjustly targeted for alleged violations of the company’s attendance policy and dress code policy.

The defendants “only cared about micromanaging and controlling the image created by, and associated with, its Black employees and their cultural and/ or stylistic preferences,” the lawsuit said.
