Before Mr Xi opened the congress with a nearly two-hour speech, delegates bowed their heads for a moment of silence for deceased leaders including Mao, the founder of the People's Republic of China, and the reformist Deng Xiaoping.
Deng's wheelchair-using eldest son Deng Pufang was there too, sitting in a back row on the main stage. He was paralysed from the waist down after mysteriously falling from a Peking University building in 1968 at the height of the turmoil of the Cultural Revolution unleashed by Mao. - REUTERS
