Ex-Nigeria boss 'reveals' real reason for shock resignation
Finidi George submitted his resignation after the Nigeria n Football Federation's reported decision to appoint a technical director to oversee his work. Nigeria 's now-ex boss has reportedly revealed the reason behind his shock resignation that came soon after the side's recent clash against Bafana Bafana.
Finidi George's decision to resign as Super Eagles manager came after disappointing results in matchday three and four of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers – a 1-1 draw with South Africa and a surprise 2-1 loss to Benin. The Nigerian Football Federation then revealed it had come up with a plan to improve results considering that the side is yet to pick up a victory in the qualification campaign, and currently sit second last in their qualifying group.
Reports suggested that former Cameroon head coach Antonio Conceicao would be appointed as a technical advisor to oversee George, who was officially appointed as the side's permanent manager in April. It is this decision, said to be taken without consulting the ex-Ajax Amsterdam star, that is believed to have influenced the 53-year-old's reported decision to leave the side last week, citing"changes to the technical crew" in his resignation letter to the NFF.
"I am writing you of my decision to step down as the head coach of the Super Eagles, Nigeria's men's senior team," George wrote in a letter to the NFF, per"Although our recent results in the qualifying matches were not as desired, I remained committed to getting our World Cup qualification campaign back on track."Please be assured of my continued support for the team, and I wish us all the best for the future.
