A former Minister of Education, Prof Tunde Adeniran, has called for a proper implementation of the proposed students’ loan scheme in order to guarantee the achievement of what it is designed for.

The ex-minister added that the proper implementation of the loan would solve a part of the persisting funding problem members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities had with the government.

Adeniran said, “I believe the idea of loans for students is a good one, so that those whose parents cannot afford it can have access to it. But the loans have to be administered appropriately so that it is not done in the usual way Nigerians do things.“The idea or policy may be fine but the implementation may be faulty; people who understand that this is for the promotion of education and to help the poor should be in charge of it.

“What we are doing now is free education to the university level. With the many leakages in our national budget, there is no way you can expect that free education in our present system has all the things that it takes, in terms of infrastructural development and yet be able to do what needs to be done in terms of funding.”

He, however, called for collaboration between the government, the private sector and parents or guardians who are ultimate beneficiaries of such education. All rights reserved.
