A former Drug Enforcement Administration spokesman has admitted in court to creating an elaborate scheme where he posed as a covert CIA agent

Garrison Kenneth Courtney, 44, pleaded guilty to a fraud charge in Eastern District of Virginia's federal court Thursday morning. He admitted to duping public officials and companies into believing he worked with the CIA and ultimately defrauded a dozen companies of more than $4 million, according to his plea.

He was released on an unsecured bond.Prosecutors in his plea said Courtney used six unnamed public officials his"unwitting props." In doing so, he used the officials to confirm his legitimacy, including by directing"his victims to speak with these public officials to verify his claims." But the officials were told exactly what to say by Courtney.
