'Evil monster seemed perfect and ideal for my daughter - then his mask slipped'

To neighbours, Michael Cooper seemed like the perfect gentleman. Charming, friendly and good looking, his family and friends thought he was the ideal match for his new partner.

But on Friday, March 3, justice was served as Judge Darren Preston sentenced him to four years for controlling and coercive behaviour. He said: "This case was described as a ‘reign of terror’. It is difficult to imagine a more serious example of coercive control than your effective imprisonment of your partner. The damage you caused can not be under exaggerated. You inflicted untold damage.”

"It got worse in lockdown", the victim's mum said. "He had nothing to do but sit at home drinking cans of Skol. I'd try to ring but he always said she was in the bath and I believed him. I thought the abuse had stopped. She wasn't in the bath though. He had her locked up. "He has taken everything from her. She is not the same girl that I remember as my daughter. He couldn't have taken any more from her, apart from putting her in a mortuary. On the rare occasion I was able to speak to her, she said everything was okay. I just wish she had said something. I would have done something.
