Serial killer handed whole-life term and described by Mr Justice Goss as having 'no remorse'
Lucy Letby was today sentenced to a whole-life term in prison for murdering seven babies and attempting to kill another six. Here is every word Mr Justice Goss told the 33-year-old nurse at Manchester Crown Court.
“Clear you were hard working, intelligent nurse enabled you to harm babies on the unit without arousing suspicion for some time. Fellow nurses spoke very highly of you. You relished being in intensive care. The methods you employed to carry out murderous intent only revealed by later detailed investigation in collapse and deaths of babies in 2018. There was premeditation, calculation and cunning in your actions.
“On occasions, you cruelly and callously made remarks to parents in the immediate aftermath. When your home was searched, documents and notes and blood gas readings were found. Handover sheets relating to all but four babies taken from the unit and kept by you. Im satisfied you started to keep those documents after offences in june 2015 as morbid records.
“On the evening 8 June 2015 you murdered baby A. He died of air embolus. You found the process of taking handprints and saw it as a way of giving memories to parents. In evidence you blamed others. You searched for parents on Facebook. The next day attempted to murder Baby B by air embolus. Fortunately she was able to be resuscitated and survived.”
Mr Justice Goss moved on to Baby F. He said when bags were changed he continued to have dangerously low blood sugar levels. He recovered. He said: “No doubt you were reassured no one suspected insulin had been added, with this knowledge you went onto attack another twin eight months later. “A month later you murdered Baby I. She suffered a series of unexplained episodes. You infused large quantity of air into her. Causing her to vomit and require oxygen. Infused air into her venus system. Recovered with breathing support and was transferred to a different hospital. Came back to Chester and suffered a final collapse, crying out in severe pain. She died in her parent’s arms.”
