Feminist icons including Gloria Steinem , Betty Friedan , Shirley Chisholm , Bella Abzug , and Jill Ruckelshaus fought for legal equality of the sexes. Meanwhile, Phyllis Schlafly led a coalition of conservative women to stop the ERA from stripping them of their gender-related privileges.
