Maslow's hierarchy of needs is often cited in discussions of motivation and self-actualization, but it turns out the theory has some serious flaws. (From 2018)
Research has now found major holes in this way of thinking, at least when it comes to education.sheds light on the effectiveness of its practice, and experts say we may need to reconsider how much emphasis is being put on the value of growth mindsets. In short: the whole thing might be a mirage.
"The authors have assembled a huge dataset of mindset studies and have looked into them with great attention to detail," says Stuart Ritchie, from the University of Edinburgh, who was not involved in the study. "They've run a large number of moderator analyses, providing us with a very thorough picture of the effects in different groups and populations, and they also ran several checks for problems like publication bias.
"We found limited evidence for mindset theory and the evidence varied by the specific claims," says Brooke Macnamara, who co-authored the study. "For example, overall, we found a significant but weak relationship between growth mindsets and academic achievement, and a significant, but small effect of growth mindset interventions on academic achievement."
