South Africa's major water and sanitation projects are all facing severe delays.

Seven of these projects are still in the planning phase, with no hard completion deadlines, while the rest, at varying stages of construction, are all delayed.All of South Africa's large water and sanitation projects currently under construction are behind schedule, with some facing delays of more than five years.

But for projects well beyond the planning phase and currently under construction, like the Giyani bulk water supply project, also in Limpopo, deadlines have come and gone. "These delays resulted in an increase in project costs which depleted the budget and caused the municipality to have insufficient funds to complete the project. The project has been at a complete standstill for almost five years."
