Paddy McCartin, who returned to the AFL this season after two years away from the game recovering from concussion issues, has suffered a fresh concussion in Sydney’s clash with Hawthorn in Launceston on Anzac Day.

“Paddy McCartin has been subbed out of the match after failing a concussion test,” the Swans tweeted early in the last quarter. The 26-year-old copped a rogue knee in the back of the head after trying to take a low mark. He was also involved in a collision earlier in the match, going back with the flight of the ball in defence.

He appeared distraught in the rooms just before three-quarter-time as the Swans activated the substitution with veteran Josh Kennedy. The former Saint suffered eight concussions between 2015 and the pre-season of 2019, which restricted the No.1 draft pick to just 35 games over five seasons with the Saints. Before joining the Swans, his last game at AFL level had been for the Saints in round 16, 2018.

It appeared as though his career had come to an end when he departed Moorabin at the end of 2019. But he got himself healthy and reinvented himself as a defender to earn a spot on Sydney’s list alongside brother Tom. McCartin played for the Swans’ VFL affiliate last season after taking a year off in 2020 and was signed as a rookie by the Swans at AFL level in January this year.
