Everton match verdict as Joe Thomas reports on the 3-0 win against Bournemouth at Goodison Park in the Premier League
Goodison Park was bathed in sunshine. The thousands of Blues leaving the Grand Old Lady were smiling under the blue skies of late summer.
That victory was the last time, before this win, Everton scored more than once at Goodison. There are so many similarities between that day in October 2022 and this win in October 2023. Sean Dyche now needs to ensure that what happens next under him does not mirror what then unfolded for Lampard. Everton could do without another false dawn.
It was achieved by Dyche staying true to the tactics that have yielded so many wasted chances in three of the four home defeats so far. Everton started fast once again. This time they took the opportunities their relentlessness created. It was a clear plan for Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Abdoulaye Doucoure to pressure the Bournemouth goal kicks and prevent them from playing out from the back. With fewer than 10 minutes on the watch the trouble caused by Everton’s non-stop hustling was already showing. As Illia Zabarnyi tried to carry the ball out from the back he slipped as he saw the oncoming Garner.
Three corners were whipped into the Bournemouth box in quick succession and Neto’s trouble dealing with them was painfully obvious. The final cross in the series was half-cleared to Harrison, who took a touch before deftly clipping the ball over the goalkeeper’s head and in off the underside of the bar. The composure and class of his first Everton goal, on his first Everton league start, was in stark contrast to the panicked efforts of Neto to deal with the Blues’ set pieces.
