Team P.E.I.’s Chloe Gallant, 13, carries the puck into the offensive zone with linemate Jorja Hambly, 12, during the 2023 Canada Winter Games in Prince Edward Island last week. Gallant, who plays with the Western Wind, and Hambly, a member of the Eastern Stars, will play against each other when their teams open the best-of-seven provincial major under-18 championship series in Georgetown on March 7.
“Both teams have quite a bit of experience, obviously with a good number of girls who just represented the Island at the Canada Games , and a number of girls who could have been there as well. Both teams are very, very even.”This year marked the first year for the Maritime Major Under-18 Female Hockey League. The nine-team league featured the Stars and Wind from P.E.I., along with seven other teams from New Brunswick and Nova Scotia.
“We finished tied for fifth, which was way more than I expected. I hoped to compete well, but I did not expect to finish middle of the pack. That was really nice to see that we belong there.” “I know it will be a fast series, I know it will be really physical and whoever wants it more is going to come out on top. They are evenly matched.”“I’m expecting a pretty rough series,” said Miller. “The girls have a history, and a lot of them have just come off playing Canada Games together.
“In order for everything to go the way we want it to go, it has to be low-scoring games,” said McNeill. “We are not a run-and-gun team, and I don’t think for the most part they are, either.
