Canadians are ensuring their gatherings don’t leave them ringing in the new year with a big bill. Here’s why pork and Boston lettuce are your friend.

Having people over for a big holiday dinner this year? Be prepared for some sticker shock.

“Turkey prices are under a lot of pressure due to higher feed costs and the avian flu,” said Charlebois. “Right now, you shouldn’t be shocked if you pay $4, $4.50 or $4.75 a pound. We feel we’re as competitive as we ever were,” said Ricker, who’s also chair of the Turkey Farmers of Ontario.

“If you’re looking to save money, I’d go for pork. All pork products are decently priced right now. Per kilo, ham is basically half the price compared to turkey,” said Charlebois. “The thing about cranberries is that they produce too much. Every single year, there’s a surplus. The production is always good,” said Charlebois. “Cranberries you basically need to flood a field and they actually grow in many different conditions.”
