The fire, also known as the Nohomin Creek wildfire, is burning 1.7 kilometres northwest of the Village of Lytton, which was razed more than a year ago after a deadly wildfire scorched through the town on June 30, 2021, killing two people. There are unconfirmed reports three structures may have been lost in the fire, said Pader Branch, executive director of regional operations for Emergency Management B.C., during a news briefing on Thursday.
The fire has prompted an air quality statement from Environment Canada for the Fraser Canyon along Trans-Canada Highway 1 from Lytton to Choate over the next 24 to 48 hours. The weather agency warned about exposure to wildfire smoke, which contains a mix of particles and gases which include chemicals that can be harmful to health.Article content
B.C. Wildfire crews have been working to contain the fire since it was first reported to the service around 12:45 p.m. Thursday at an initial size of two hectares.Service is responding to the Nohomin Creek wildfire located approximately 1.7 km northwest of Lytton, on the west side of the Fraser River. The fire is estimated at two hectares in size. Fire behaviour is being influenced by gusty winds in the area.
