“An evacuation is not pending immediately, but we want people to be aware that it is a possibility.' Premier Andrew Furey is warning people in central Newfoundland to be ready to move on short notice in the event the path of the fires change.

Grand Falls-Windsor-Buchans MHA Chris Tibbs shared this photo of the forest fire in central Newfoundland Saturday. A provincial government announced a statement of emergency for the area that day. — Chris Tibbs/FacebookThe situation with an out-of-control forest fire that's been raging for a couple of weeks in central Newfoundland escalated over the weekend, forcing the provincial government to declare a state of emergency and put in a request for extra assistance federally.

“The predictive analysis is showing that with the wind change, we're afraid there'll be significant smoke impact on Grand Falls-Windsor, Bishop Falls and the surrounding area,” he said. “An evacuation is not pending immediately, but we want people to be aware that it is a possibility. That means looking after yourselves, looking after your neighbours and being ready to evacuate if it's required on short notice.”

The Canadian Red Cross and Salvation Army were also pitching in to help people stranded due to the fires through emergency lodging. A congregate shelter was also set up Saturday at the Windsor Pentecostal Church in Grand Falls-Windsor.
