On Friday, top EU diplomat Josep Borrell met Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, who described the talks as "comprehensive, candid and friendly".
“Europe takes China very, very seriously,” he said. “We also expect to be considered not through the lens of our relationship with others, but in ourselves.” He said he had discussed with Chinese officials the crisis in Israel and Gaza, and announced that his chief of staff, Mr Enrique Mora, would be visiting Beijing next week to continue to engage Chinese officials on geopolitical issues.
“But what we discussed with my Chinese counterpart is that it is the only solution that can be implemented,” he added. The EU’s record US$426 billion trade deficit in 2022 with the world’s second-largest economy has become a major sticking point in the relationship. During talks in Beijing in September, China’s economy czar, Mr He Lifeng, asked EU Trade Commissioner Valdis Dombrovskis to “exercise restraint in the use of trade remedy measures”.
