A major citrus organisation in Spain wants European authorities to quarantine the entire Eastern Cape Province.
The Citrus Management Committee of Spain wants European authorities to quarantine South Africa’s Eastern Cape province after the discovery of a dangerous pathogen in its citrus fruit, writes
Citrus greening, also known as Huanglongbing , ranks among the world’s most severe citrus diseases. Infected trees typically die within a few years, and currently, there is no cure.According to Spain’s CGC, the dangerous pathogen was in fact first identified in East London in 2022, though no official notification was made at that time.
Notably, the Citrus Foundation Block is where buds are sanitised for later use by the nurseries that supply citrus trees all over the country “We have warned for years that South Africa is not a reliable supplier of citrus fruit to the EU and that its authorities lack credibility regarding plant health,” she said.. The CGC is calling for the “immediate quarantine of the entire province and its exclusion from the EU export program.”
