EU braces itself as ‘post-fascist’ Giorgia Meloni set to be Italy’s first far-right leader since Mussolini 🔍 Analysis from michael2day
Fly south across the Alps and you appear to traverse not only over a mountain range but also a dimensional barrier. Welcome to Italy. This G7 nation, with the world’s most beautiful art, architecture, cuisine and scenery is also a land of exotic political turbulence. Italy is currently going through one of its frequent upheavals. The result will be the election on Sunday of the country’s first far-right leader since Musssolini.
Back in 1994, as the chancer/huckster Berlusconi filled the gap in mainstream politics created when the establishment imploded after the epochal Clean Hands corruption hearings, he needed the support of the far-right – and Northern League to make up the numbers. But it’s undeniable that Meloni has not only benefited from events beyond her control but also skilfully exploited them.
It was in opposition that Meloni built her political profile. During the peak of the Covid pandemic that ravaged the north of Italy, in particular, she was able to exploit the concerns and discontent over the deaths, hardship and lockdowns without explicitly criticising all the desperate public health measures.
Significantly, Meloni has been insistent in recasting herself as pro-west. This will give her leverage in the coming economic skirmishes with Brussels.
