When the pioneering anatomist William Harvey got the chance to touch a living man's exposed heart, it confirmed his theory that the organ wasn't the seat of the soul, but a simple pump
Vincent M. FigueredoDeaths from heart disease have fallen from their peak in the 1950s, thanks to the development of more effective imaging and treatments. Still, even at the peak of the Covid pandemic, heart disease remained the leading cause of death in the U.S., as it has been for more than a century. Worldwide, 6.3 million people died from Covid by July 2022, while 18 million people died from cardiovascular disease in 2021 alone.
The long road to understanding how the heart works began almost 400 years ago, when the English physician William Harvey discovered that an organ long revered as the center of human being was in fact just a pump with no power of sensation. This discovery was dramatically confirmed in 1641, when Harvey met a young Irish nobleman named Hugh Montgomery. When he was 10 years old, Montgomery fell from a stumbling horse onto a jutting rock, which pierced and broke multiple ribs on his left side.
