Eskom will do away with the position of chief operating officer, currently occupied by Jan Oberholzer, according to board member Mteto Nyathi

Oberholzer, who together with outgoing CEO André de Ruyter, have been at the helm during the worst load shedding level this country has seen, is retiring in April this year.Looking at where we are going at Eskom its strategic intent, the fact that there is going separation and unbundling of the different entities and also looking back at where we come from, this phenomenon is something new within Eskom.

Eskom’s acting head of generation Thomas Conradie said the power utility was anticipating reducing the stages of load shedding by the weekend after between stages 4 and 6 were implemented during the week. “There’s a lot of focus in ensuring that our planned outages are back on time and that they return reliably and similarly the units that are on forced outages. Unfortunately, we’re still sitting with high levels of high unreliability bringing in a level of unpredictability in terms of units breaking down. Typically we’ll have two units being lost in that day whereas other days you could four or five units being lost crating a difficulty in us having adequate capacity.

Eskom had imposed higher stages of load shedding in the past because it did not have money for diesel. The power utility said it had enough diesel for now.
