The fact that Eskom has needed to switch off some units in recent months does not mean everything will be coming up roses for the utility or its customers in the next few years.

Eskom has defied the odds and expectations of energy experts and the general public and breathed new life into its ailing coal power fleet in 2024.

The two main reasons for the improvement are a significant reduction in unplanned breakdowns due to the successful implementation of Eskom’s generation recovery plan and a drop in electricity demand. The graph below from Chris Yelland shows how Eskom’s average weekly EAF has performed in the year-to-date compared with 2023, 2022, and 2021.The power utility has attributed the improvements to its generation recovery plan, implemented by the Mtetho Nyati-led Eskom board, after receiving a detailed report from German consultancy firm VGB Energy.
