Three charts showing Eskom’s recovery and the primary factors that contributed to it.

Eskom ’s miraculous and continued suspension of load-shedding can be attributed to two primary factors: reduced demand and improving electricity availability factor .

Load-shedding increased from Q4 2023 to Q1 2024, reaching nearly 4,000GWh in 2024’s first quarter — half the amount shed in Q1 2023. A lot of this growth has come from the private sector, helped by President Cyril Ramaphosa’s increasing the cap on private generation capacity in 2021 and lifting it in 2022.

Eskom’s average weekly EAF reached its highest point for the year in week 27 : 65.89%. It dropped slightly last week to 65.62%. According to Nedbank’s Energy Tracker data, Eskom’s average annual EAF used to be close to 80%. It declined significantly in recent years, reaching a low of under 55% in 2023.Eskom’s EAF improvements in late 2023 and early 2024 — primarily due to more effective maintenance — have seen its weekly average EAF figure increase substantially since.
