SA needs to add a whopping 50 000 MW – equal to replacing its entire fleet – of additional generation capacity to the national transmission grid over the next 13 years to cover the energy supply gap and replace retiring coal stations, Eskom chief operating officer Jan Oberholzer said on Wednesday. Oberholzer and Eskom executives were briefing the media on the state of the system as at the end of the financial year.
The report revealed Eskom’s worst performance to date, with its generation units tripping a record 697 times. By the end of March, the energy availability factor of the coal fleet had sunk to 55.5%, meaning almost half of it, on average, was unable to dispatch energy at any one time.
