The National Energy Regulator of South Africa (Nersa) has approved a 12.7% increase in Eskom's electricity prices for the 2025/26 financial year, significantly lower than Eskom's initial application of 36.15%. This will result in an average increase of R161 to R692 per month for residential customers from April 1, 2025. of just 12.70% for 2025/26, 5.36% for 2026/27, and 6.19% for 2027/2028. The approved effective increase is 26.09% over three years. It said its decision-making process weighed affordability for vulnerable sectors and the submissions it received from stakeholders. While Nersa didn’t confirm the municipal tariffs it approved, the adjustments it approves for municipal customers will take effect on 1 July each year.
Households that consume 450kWh per month on average currently pay R1,269 per month for electricity. Their bills will increase by R161 to R1,430 from 1 April 2025. Customers consuming more than 600kWh monthly pay R4.45 per kWh on Homepower 1, R4.35 per kWh on Homepower 2 and 3, and R4.54 per kWh on Homepower 4.
