Eskom has now spent 200 days without having to use loadshedding. Just how well has it managed during this important timespan.
After years of facing an electricity crisis and sweeping blackouts in South Africa, state-owned utility Eskom managed in 2024 to turn the ship and cease rotational outages proclaimed as “loadshedding.” As of 13th October 2024, Eskom celebrated 200 days without loadshedding since March 2024 – much to the delight and confusion of South Africans.
The plan includes changing the culture at Eskom, changing the way the utility handles the maintenance of its existing power stations, the addition of several sources of renewable power, completing several other projects to add more electricity to the grid that have long been in the development, and increasing demand-side electricity management, among other plans.
Marokane says that Eskom is now working to reach an energy availability of 70 percent by March 2025. Plans are also in place to add more independent power produces to the grid and 2 000MW of electricity from renewable sources.
