South African power utility Eskom has recovered from a temporary setback that forced energy cuts on Friday. The company experienced multiple breakdowns last week, requiring extended repairs and full utilization of emergency reserves. Eskom has since replenished these reserves and restored five coal-fired generation units, adding 2,930MW to the grid. The utility anticipates another 2,391MW restoration on Sunday. Eskom maintains its 'Summer Outlook' and highlights a downward trend in unplanned outages, now averaging 12,087MW. Planned maintenance outages stand at 6,298MW, aligned with their strategy to enhance reliability for the upcoming winter.
The utility said that due to a temporary setback, it was forced to implement the energy cutting initiative on Friday.
“As promised, Eskom has since replenished these reserves, with dam levels fully replenished and open-cycle gas turbines adequately recovered, ensuring a stable supply,” according to Eskom’s spokesperson, Daphne Mokwena.
