Here is how Eskom’s 36% price hike will impact EV running costs.
Eskom’s proposed tariff hikes for 2025 will make electric vehicle running costs more expensive, but they would still be much cheaper to use than a petrol car.
MyBroadband has experienced this price advantage firsthand in our tests of four EVs over the past year. Numbeo has estimated the average South African motorist travels about 43km in their daily commute, which works out to 1,290km per month.Although that is quite a large amount of electricity, it would cost just R887, with Eskom’s current average of R3.62 per kWh for a direct Homepower 4 customer using 900kWh per month.
However, the vast majority of hundreds of EVs on EVDatabase are not sold in South Africa, so using the 19kWh/100km average might not be ideal. The table below summarises our calculations for the changes in running costs of the average electric car and Volvo XC40.Therefore, EV owners can rest easy knowing about their lower running costs, and manufacturers are assured this will continue to remain a viable marketing point — likely for several more years.
