ESKOM LIVE | Stage 6 load shedding kicks in again as absenteeism, intimidation still 'rife'
Stage 6 load shedding will be implemented again from 14:00 until midnight on Thursday, Eskom said in a statement. This is due to the continued unprotected strike at the power utility.
Unions earlier called for members to return to work. But on Thursday morning, news broke that some members of the National Union of Metalworkers of SA and the National Union of Mineworkers have rejected a 7% wage offer. The National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa , the National Union of Mineworkers and Solidarity were expected to return to wage talks at the Central Bargaining Forum on Friday.
The internal document says union members requested that NUM and Numsa provide members with two buses so that they can travel to Eskom's Megawatt Park in Johannesburg on Friday. The document is signed by NUM's deputy secretary Tumediso Tisane and Numsa secretary Koketso Ramalepe. Members had also requested the unions to provide buses to Eskom's Megawatt Park headquarters on Friday. The members were calling for the removal of Andre de Ruyter as CEO, Jan Oberholzer and COO and general manager for people relations Thulane Ngele.
Stage 4 loadshedding will be implemented from 22:00 until midnight, and then reduced to Stage 2 until 05:00 on Thursday morning. From 05:00 until 00:00 on Thursday loadshedding will be at Stage 4."While some workers have started reporting for duty at the power stations, there is still a high level of absenteeism. As a result of the unlawful strike, routine maintenance work has had to be postponed. This backlog will take days to weeks to clear," Eskom said.
